EDCOUCH, Texas (ValleyCentral) — One person drowned and another is missing after a vehicle suspected of migrant smuggling attempted to cross a flooded road and plunged into a canal, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said.
At 10:15 a.m. on Friday, Border Patrol agents approached a vehicle on foot that had stopped at a flooded roadway.
According to the release, the vehicle was suspected of smuggling migrants.
The driver had attempted to cross the flooded road and plunged into a canal. Gloria Chavez, Chief Patrol Agent for the Rio Grande Valley Sector, added that one occupant had drowned and their body had been recovered.
However, agents say they are currently continuing rescue and recovery efforts for the second passenger.
This is an ongoing investigation.
