KTSM News – Las Cruces hosts hiking/walking events in April, May

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Las Cruces Parks and Recreation Department will host weekly hiking and walking events in April and May.

Hiking Trails in the Southwest will take place on Fridays from April 11 through May 23 at different locations.

Hikers and walkers of all ages, whether beginners or experienced, are welcome to participate in these outings that are designed for social engagement and health improvement, the City of Las Cruces said.

Participants must register no later than the day prior to their selected hiking event.

In-person registration is available at the Frank O’Brien Papen Community Center, 304 W. Bell Ave.

Online registration is available online by clicking the Adult and Family Programs tab.

Participants should wear comfortable, appropriate footwear and be prepared for the weather with hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and plenty of water. Some locations may require a parking pass.

Each hiking and walking activity begins at 9 a.m. and includes:

Friday, April 11

  • Picacho Mountain (2.2 miles)
  • Meet-up location: TBD

Friday, April 18

  • Dripping Springs Trail (3 miles)
  • Meet-up location: Dripping Springs Natural Area, 15000 Dripping Springs Road

Friday, April 25

  • Ridge Line and Discovery (3.2 miles)
  • Meet-up location: TBD

Friday, May 2

  • Mesilla Valley Bosque Trail (1.6 miles)
  • Meet-up location: 5000 Calle del Norte, Mesilla, N.M.

Friday, May 9

  • Veterans Park Dam (2.8 miles)
  • Meet-up location: Roadrunner Parkway, Las Cruces, N.M. 88011

Friday, May 16, 2025

  • La Cueva Loop Trail (2.9 miles)
  • Meet-up location: Dripping Springs Natural Area, 15000 Dripping Springs Road

Friday, May 23

  • “A” Mountain (5 miles)
  • Meet-up location: The parking lot accessed from University Avenue/Dripping Springs Road, just east of the Sonoma Ranch Boulevard intersection (west side of “A” Mountain)
