KTSM News – Socorro, County team up for pecan drop-off site

Posted on April 1, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The City of Socorro and El Paso County have launched a pecan shell drop-off location, the City of Socorro announced in a news release on Tuesday, April 1.

The drop-off site is located at 241 Old Hueco Tanks Road and will be available from April 1 through April 30. Hours are 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Monday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

“Pecan shells, particularly in a densely populated area, serve as a habitat for the red beetle, which has become a growing concern for residents and businesses,” the City of Socorro said. “This project is designed to benefit communities in the Lower Valley agricultural region, where homes and businesses have been overrun by invading beetles. By providing a dedicated drop-off location, El Paso County and the City of Socorro aim to mitigate the impact of these pests and maintain a cleaner, healthier environment for all residents.”

The drop-off site is open to all residents of El Paso County.

This initiative is made possible through a grant from the Texas Department of Agriculture.

Residents are encouraged to take advantage of this drop-off location to ensure the proper disposal of pecan shells.
