El Paso Matters – Fact check: Did Mexico shut down its ports of entry to protest Trump’s tariffs?

No.

A widely shared video showing an entrance to the World Trade Bridge port of entry being closed by the Mexican National Guard was filmed on Feb. 27, 2025, during a protest by truckers upset over long crossing times, news outlets reported.

The video clip of the international bridge that connects Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, to Laredo, Texas, was shared on TikTok, X and Facebook starting on March 4, 2025, when President Trump’s 25% tariffs were supposed to go into effect.

The closure was caused by protestors blocking lanes on the Mexican side of the bridge, officials told KGNS, a Laredo news station. Truckers protested increased security measures by the Mexican National Guard that have caused long delays and inspections, Telemundo Laredo and Forte Noticias reported.

None of the news outlets cited tariffs as the reason for the closures.

On March 6, Trump delayed tariffs on Mexican goods, NPR reported.
