KTSM News – There’s Nothing to do in El Paso: El Paso Municipal Rose Garden

Posted on April 4, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – In this week’s episode of There’s Nothing to do in El Paso, KTSM 9 News Ian Roth and Karla Draksler put on their gardening gloves to help volunteer Master Gardeners take care of the almost fully bloomed Municipal Rose Garden.

The first rose bushes planted in 1958 have stood through the test of time and to this day can be admired in this long-standing garden.

Four acres of various rose types located at 1702 N Copia Street are not an easy feat to maintain.

Each year, dozens of volunteer Master Gardeners make sure that the beauty and health of all the flowers remain intact.

This partnership between Texas A&M Agri Life Extension and the City of El Paso with El Paso Rose Society began in the early 2000s, and every year they train more volunteers to help out with pruning, fertilizing, and deadheading, along with other maintenance duties at the garden.

Despite the lack of rain, El Paso has the perfect climate to grow roses, according to Eduardo Rascon, the county extension agent for horticulture in El Paso and the Master Gardener volunteer coordinator.

You can visit the Rose Garden from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily from March to November, and April 26 will be their open house day when you can meet volunteer Master Gardeners, ask for advice, or even sign up to become one.
