EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Anthony High School Artistry Winterguard team earned the Grand Champions title at the West Texas Color Guard Association (WTCA) competition held on Saturday, March 29.
Anthony ISD said the team competed in the Scholastic A category, “the second highest” division in the competition.
Despite being a 3A school, Anthony competed against much larger 6A schools, the district said.
“Every year, we’ve moved up a class in competition — facing tougher groups, more challenging choreography, and stricter judging standards. I am beyond proud of Anthony Artistry Winterguard for closing out this season, our very first year competing in the Scholastic A classification, with a 1st place trophy,” Jaquelyne Pearson, color guard director, said.
The district said that when the team first started in 2023, its members had no prior dance or color guard experience.
“I was really excited for the challenge, and I trusted my coaches, Ms. Pearson and Ms. Saad, every step of the way,” Estrella Solis, the team captain, said. “When we started, we were in Regional A, one of the smallest divisions, and no one even knew who Anthony was. Now, we’re champions.”
This year, the team performed a choreography inspired by a music box, depicting dolls that come to life when the key turns, the district said.
“These ladies never cease to amaze me with their creativity, heart, and the way they constantly lift each other up. From bringing choreography ideas to life to becoming a true family, they’ve poured everything into this season,” Pearson said. “It’s hard to put into words just how proud I am of their hard work and dedication to this program. Watching them grow and fall in love with this sport, just like I did, has been the greatest journey as their volor guard director.”
The district said the Anthony Artistry Winterguard has provided students with an outlet for creativity and self-expression by allowing them to grow in the fine arts and develop important character traits.
