EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The El Paso Police Department is fighting back against catalytic converter theft with a VIN etching event.
The free event will be from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 12 at Take 5 Oil Change, 915 Sunland Park Dr.
The event is being put on by the Police Department’s Auto Theft Task Force, Westside Regional Command, EPPD Police Cadets and Take 5 Oil Change.
“With Texas ranking No. 2 in the national for catalytic converter thefts, the event aims to equip local vehicle owners with tools to protect their cars,” the Police Department said.
During the event, free VIN etching on catalytic converters will be offered.
“The rise in catalytic converter thefts has become a growing issue, with over 735 thefts reported in El Paso over the past three years. By engraving the vehicle’s VIN (vehicle identification number) onto the catalytic converter, it becomes significantly more difficult for thieves to sell the part without proof of ownership, making it a deterrent against these crimes,” the Police Department said.
