Border Report – Millions of gallons of sewage now flowing into the Tijuana River — but why?

Posted on April 10, 2025

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — An additional 5 million gallons of sewage a day is now flowing into the Tijuana River and across the border, something that Mexico is doing deliberately. The sewage dumping is expected to continue for several days.

The International Boundary and Water Commission released a statement about the matter, noting, “Mexico has informed us they started discharging approximately 5 million gallons a day of wastewater into the Tijuana River Tuesday night as they repair a critical junction box that is part of the International Collector Project.”

The statement goes on to say that Mexico allegedly spent days looking at other alternatives but exhausted all options. Images were provided showing the work that’s being done in Mexico, as seen below.

Officials say they are in the process of trying to make repairs to infrastructure that connects to the huge international pipeline that carries raw sewage from Tijuana to the treatment plants. And again, in order to make immediate repairs needed, they say it’s requiring them to divert their sewage flow.

Those same officials claim that most of the the wastewater is going to the Mexican coast, but about 5 million gallons a day will go to the Tijuana River. The work causing this new sewage flow is expected to last about five days, as the project to rehabilitate the international collector pipeline remains ongoing.
