EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A 20-year-old man is being charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after another man was run over and killed in the aftermath of a fight over the weekend at an East El Paso County truck stop, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said.
Abraham Alvarado, 20, has been arrested and charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in the death of 18-year-old Leonel Monarrez. Alvarado was booked into the El Paso County Detention Center under a $650,000 bond.
At about 2:10 a.m. on Sunday, April 20, Socorro Police Department officers were dispatched to the Petro truck stop located at 1295 Horizon Blvd. about a fight in progress. Upon arrival, officers were met by witnesses who reported that a male subject had been run over in the parking lot by a gray SUV.
Witnesses further stated that the injured male was taken from the scene by other people.
Officers later learned that the victim, identified as Monarrez, had been to a local hospital after being struck by a vehicle in the Petro parking lot. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit was requested to take over the investigation.
Through the course of the investigation, the driver was identified as Alvarado and he was taken into custody.
“When we work with partnering agencies, we combine our resources and move as one to
bring justice to our community,” Sheriff Oscar Ugarte said. “If you commit a violent crime
in El Paso County, we will find you, and we will arrest you.”
The investigation remains ongoing, the Sheriff’s Office said.
