Voters in the towns of Anthony and Horizon City and the city of San Elizario on Saturday elected a handful of aldermen and mayors to their respective councils – several of them who were uncontested.
The races were part of the May 3 uniform election that also featured school board races in the El Paso and Socorro independent school districts, as well as El Paso Community College trustees.
Horizon City voters also easily approved a proposition to reauthorize the use of a local sales tax to pay for street maintenance and repairs. The additional sales tax of 0.25% creates revenue for street projects.
Voters in the Village of Vinton strongly supported a proposition to reduce the tax rate adopted by the council that was above the voter-approved rate – the highest it could adopt without triggering a rollback election. With the approval, the tax rate will roll back to 68.8 cents per $100 valuation from the 80 cents previously adopted.
A handful of voters served by the Haciendas Del Norte Water Improvement District in East El Paso north of Montana Avenue near Fort Bliss strongly supported a $5 million bond proposal for water service improvements.
Here’s a rundown of the election results for town councils and the propositions:
City of San Elizario
- Alderman Place 1: Hector Ramos, uncontested, 100%
- Alderman Place 2: David A. Cantu, incumbent, 45.5%; Tony Grijalva, 54.5%
- Alderman Place 3: Lorenzo Leyva, incumbent, uncontested, 100%
Town of Anthony
- Mayor: Rick Villarreal, 1.6%; Anthony Turner, incumbent, 31.5%; Martin Lerma, 42.5%; Benjamin Romero, 24.4% (Lerma wins; no runoff)
- Alderman Place 1: Lourdes Garcia, uncontested, 100%
- Alderman Place 2: Manny Balderas, uncontested, 100%
Town of Horizon City
- Alderman Place 1: Guillermo (Willie) Ortega, 44%; Charlie Ortega, 56%
- Alderman Place 2: Scott Quiroz, uncontested, 100%
- Alderman Place 4: Robert Avila, 58%; Sandra Sierra, 42%
- Alderman Place 5: Katherine Ames, uncontested, 100%
- Alderman Place 6: Matthew Gardea, uncontested, 100%
Haciendas Del Norte Water Improvement District
Proposition A: The issuance of bonds in an amount not to exceed $5,000,000 for waterworks system and the levying of a tax in payment of the principal of and interest on the bonds.
- For: 79.4% Against: 20.6%
Town of Horizon City
Proposition A: The reauthorization of the local sales and use tax in the Town of Horizon City, Texas at the rate of one fourth (1/4) of one percent (1%) to continue providing revenue for maintenance and repair of municipal streets.
For: 72% Against: 28%
Village of Vinton
Proposition A: Reducing the tax rate in the Village of Vinton for the current year from $0.801437 per $100 valuation to $0.688226 per $100 valuation.
