EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The driver of a tow truck was unable to stop in time at an intersection and set off a crash that involved 12 vehicles, killing one person and injuring more than a half-dozen others, El Paso Police said.

Police also identified the driver of the tow truck involved in the crash in this past Thursday, May 8 in Northwest El Paso.

1 dead, 8 injured after ‘mass casualty incident’ at Transmountain

Police say the preliminary investigation revealed that a white semi-truck and a black trailer became disabled at around 6 a.m. that morning on Loop 375.

A yellow tow truck was requested to tow both trailers off the roadway, and for unknown reasons, the driver of the tow truck, who has been identified as Alfredo Campos, 28, was not able to stop as it approached the intersection of Loop 375 and North Desert Road.

A 65-year-old passenger was in the yellow tow truck at the time of the crash and was killed. Police did not identify the man.

As a result, 12 vehicles were involved in the accident and several people were injured, police said.

Police say that five men and two women were injured in the crash. Initially, El Paso Fire reported that eight people were injured, including three who declined being transported.

As of Friday, May 9, Campos has not been charged regarding the crash.

The investigation is ongoing. This is the 22nd fatality of the year compared to 23 last year.
