SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum says she is planning to invite the new Pope, Leo XIV, to visit Mexico in the near future.
On Friday, during her daily briefing with the media, Sheinbaum said she hopes the new pontiff can continue Pope Francis’ charity work while building peace around the world.
“First of all, I want to congratulate him, he is the new leader of the Catholic church, head of the Vatican state,” Sheinbaum said. “He is a beacon for the poor, which is good, he’ll tend to their needs and at the same time build peace and prosperity worldwide.”
Mexico’s president stated the pope’s perspective should be respected by everyone no matter religious affiliation.
“Mexico has a population that is primarily Catholic, someone who deserves our congratulations.”
Sheinbaum did say she will not attend the Pope’s inaugural Mass scheduled for May 18, but looks forward to presenting him with a formal invitation soon to visit Mexico.
