EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A U.S. Army soldier is facing charges after he allegedly took photos of children undressing at his El Paso home, downloaded child sexual abuse material, and also used artificial intelligence (AI) to generate inappropriate images of children he knew, according to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).
The DOJ says a federal grand jury returned an indictment on Wednesday, May 14, and charged Seth Herrera, 35, with attempted sexual exploitation of a child and receipt of files depicting child sexual abuse.
The DOJ says Herrera allegedly used encrypted messaging applications and network applications to find, receive, and download child sexual abuse material since 2021.
Herrera also used AI chatbots to generate child sexual abuse material using images of children that he knew, according to the DOJ.
Herrera is also alleged to have taken images and videos of those same children undressing at his home in El Paso, according to the DOJ.
Herrera is already charged in Alaska relating to his alleged transportation, receipt, and possession of child sexual abuse material, including AI-generated material, while stationed at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska.
Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) is investigating the case.
