The population in El Paso’s city limits grew by 150 people between 2023 and 2024, continuing a decade-long plateauing of people, according to new estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau.
The city of El Paso had an estimated population of 681,723 in July 2024, according to data released by the Census Bureau on May 15. The numbers aren’t from a full-blown census, which is conducted every 10 years, but are estimates based on data on deaths, births and migration.
The city’s population has grown by 0.4% since the 2020 census, El Paso’s slowest growth rate since the Great Depression in the 1930s. Census Bureau estimates show that El Paso’s population has increased by only 1% since 2012, when the Army largely completed its expansion of Fort Bliss after relocating the 1st Armored Division from Germany.
El Paso’s population trends over the past decade have been driven by declining international migration, high levels of movement by El Pasoans to other Southwest cities in search of better economic opportunities, and a rapidly declining birth rate.
El Paso’s population made it the nation’s 23rd largest city in 2024, down one spot from 2023. Washington, D.C., added almost 15,000 people since 2023 to move past El Paso.
Trends in smaller towns
El Paso County’s two smallest incorporated towns and cities – Clint and Vinton – had the largest population growths in 2024, at least by percentage.
Clint, in eastern El Paso County, added 54 people between 2023 and 2024 to reach a population of 1,069, a 5.3% increase. Vinton, in northwest El Paso County, added 76 people to reach a population of 2,013, a 3.9% increase.
Horizon City and Socorro continued to show moderate population growth last year, while Anthony and San Elizario showed slight declines.
New Mexico towns and small cities near El Paso showed moderate population growth between 2023 and 2024, with Sunland Park – adjacent to West El Paso – growing by 2.1%. Santa Teresa, also adjacent to West El Paso, is an unincorporated area so it is not included in the city population estimates.
New Mexico’s midsize cities, including Las Cruces, showed moderate population gains in 2024, continuing a trend that has been going on for several years.
Albuquerque, New Mexico’s largest city and the nearest large urban area to El Paso, continued to show population decline. Albuquerque has shed population each year since the last census in 2020.
