Border Report – Fewer Mexican nationals deported under Trump, immigration official says

Posted on May 22, 2025

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — The director of Baja California’s Migrant Affairs Office said data shows significantly fewer Mexican migrants being deported than during the same three-month period last year.

The data, compiled by Mexico’s National Institute of Migration, shows 32,537 Mexican nationals deported during the first three months of this year, compared to 47,659 during the same time frame in 2024 when Joe Biden was president.

Earlier this week, Adriana Minerva Espinoza Nolazco also told reporters that only 4,200 people have been brought to a shelter set up to house deported migrants since it opened Jan. 27.

She says on average, 37 migrants arrive daily at the facility, and that most are from the Mexican states of México, Guerrero y Michoacán.

Tijuana shelters see funding, US donations dry up

The site was originally set up to house up to 500 migrants per day offering shelter, meals and basic services including a $100 stipend to help deportees get back home.

“The numbers predicted by President Donald Trump are well below what we are seeing in terms of deportations.”

Still, Espinoza Nolazco said despite the low numbers, the shelter will stay open.

Migrant nonprofits resort to donations, litigation as federal funding dries up

“It’s important that we remain in operation,” she said. “We are talking about our fellow Mexican nationals. The federal government has indicated we need to stay open since Tijuana is one of the regions where migrants are being deported in bigger numbers.”

Espinoza Nolazco added that since President Trump took over, there has been a 50% to 60% decrease in the number of migrants arriving in the city of Tijuana generating many vacancies at shelters throughout the region.

“We have to remain ready for an influx that could happen at any moment, we can’t afford to rest and be caught unprepared.”
