EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – In recognition of National Heat Awareness Day, El Paso Animal Services will host its annual event that helps the community prepare for the hot months ahead, the City of El Paso said in a news release.
The City said the HeatSafe: Protecting Pets & People event, which is free to the public, will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, May 30, at the El Paso Animal Services, 5001 Fred Wilson Ave.
Heat is one of the leading weather-related causes of death in the U.S., according to the National Weather Service.
“Pets are also at risk, with El Paso Animal Services regularly responding to reports of animals left without shade, water, or left in hot vehicles. This event aims to raise awareness and provide life-saving resources,” read the news release.
The City said this year’s event will feature free pet microchips, free doggy life vests for the pool, free ID tags, and a variety of giveaways for attendees.
Vista Hills Animal Hospital will also be offering discounted pet vaccines, the City said.
In addition, local vendors will be on hand with pet-related products and safety tips to ensure pets stay cool, hydrated, and safe in the hot weather, the City said.
Event highlights include the following, according to the news release:
- Live “hot car” demonstration: See the real-time effects of extreme heat on pets and humans.
- Free pet microchips & ID tags: Available for the first 100 attendees.
- Discounted pet vaccines: Provided by Vista Hills Animal Hospital.
- Free doggy life vests: For pool safety, while supplies last.
- Educational booths: Featuring local vendors and resources on heat safety for pets.
