EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso Public Libraries are welcoming readers of all ages to join their Summer Reading Program this season.
With this year’s theme as Color the World, the reading program will be from Monday, June 2, through Saturday, Aug. 30, according to the news release by the City of El Paso.
The program is free and encourages children, teens and families to participate in reading and engaging in library events, according to the news release.
“We want to encourage students to read with their families over the summer when they’re not in school,” El Paso Public Libraries Director Norma Martinez said. “Programs like the Summer Reading Club have proven to help children succeed in school and in life. Plus, now that we have eliminated overdue fines, we want everyone to come back to their neighborhood branch library.”
Studies show that students who don’t participate in learning activities over the summer break risk academic setbacks, according to the City.
Families can easily sign up to participate in the reading program in person at any El Paso Public Library branch or register online.
Participants of the challenge can track books, reading minutes, and activities using the Beanstack app or the library website, which earns participants rewards as they reach reading milestones.
According to the City, readers will also be entered into raffles for a chance to win prizes donated by local businesses and community partners, such as tickets to local attractions, gift cards, treats, and more.
The Summer Reading Program will feature hundreds of free events across all library branches, including appearances from magicians, DJs, face-painters, storytellers, and educational presentations on topics such as conservation, health, and nutrition, the City said.
In addition to the summer reading program, participants will also be receiving a free book through a Texas Reads grant, while supplies last, according to the City.
The grant will assist with a special event on Saturday, July 5, at the Main Library and Dorris Van Doren branches, featuring award-winning El Paso author and illustrator, Raul the Third.
