Border Report – Tijuana boxer Munguía tests positive for banned substance after bout in Saudi Arabia

Posted on May 29, 2025

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — Former WBO junior middleweight Champion Jaime Munguía tested positive for exogenous testosterone, a banned substance in boxing, after his unanimous win May 4 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, according to Ring Magazine.

After defeating France’s Bruno Surace, both boxers were tested for performance enhancing drugs, a common practice in the sport.

Munguía who is from Tijuana, has 10 days to request results from his “B-sample,” a common practice for athletes whenever they test positive for illegal drugs or performance enhancers.

Experts say historically, B-sample outcomes are rarely different.

Surace had beaten Munguía by knockout in their first encounter last December in Tijuana.

Four charged with possession of $175,000 in stolen Nikes

At the time of their second fight this month, Munguía had a record of 45-2 with 35 knockouts.

Munguía, 28, was the WBO junior middleweight champion from May 28 through December 2019, but had struggled in heavier weight classes including a defeat at the hands of Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez a year ago.

Social media post from Jaime Mungía.

Through a social media account, Munguía claimed to be falsely accused saying in part: “throughout my boxing career I have undergone numerous anti-doping tests and have never tested positive.”

He goes on to say he was tested twice in the run-up to his fight with Surace without a positive result.
