He never imagined that a little more than a decade later he’d sell out Houston’s 72,000-seat NRG Stadium—twice. In the intervening years, the Conroe native garnered multiple number one singles, walked away with the 2021 Academy of Country Music award for New Male Artist of the Year, opened for George Strait, and played at Donald Trump’s second inauguration. But with success came a push for polish in the studio and a marketing emphasis on his leading-man looks—his 2021 album, Gold Chain Cowboy, featured a cover shot of him in full beefcake…
