KTSM News – Community meeting highlights end of transit service in Socorro

Posted on June 3, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The El Paso Transportation Authority is hosting a public information meeting about the end of transit service in Socorro.

As we have previously reported, El Paso Transit Authority buses will no longer stop in Socorro starting July 1.

The public meeting will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 4 at the Sergio Troncoso Public Library, 9321 Alameda.

The El Paso Transportation Authority (ETA) operates the regional bus system serving communities throughout the greater El Paso area.

“Since 2021, ETA has established strong, ongoing partnerships with nearly every municipality in the region to ensure coordinated, accessible transit service for all residents,” according to a release sent out by the transit authority.

However, in 2024, the City Council of Socorro voted not to enter into a service agreement with ETA, the transit authority said.

As a result, effective July 1, ETA bus service in Socorro will be discontinued. While buses will continue to pass through the city, they will no longer stop to pick up or drop off passengers within its city limits, the transit authority said.

Paratransit services — which offer essential mobility for individuals with disabilities, including many who are among the most underserved and at-risk in our community — may also be discontinued in Socorro, the transit authority said.

The public is invited to attend this meeting to learn more and explore how community input can help shape the future of transit service in Socorro, the transit authority said.

We have reached out to the City of Socorro for comment. We will update this story when we hear back.
