SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — The city of Rosarito, a popular beach destination 20 miles south of the border, is planning to build a boardwalk along its coastline.
Mayor Rocío Adame Muñoz has reintroduced a plan to start the work as soon as possible.
During a council meeting this week, she said her administration is seeking federal funding to get the project started.
“There is no concrete timeline to start the development, this is actually a project that was brought up by the previous administration,” she said. “Federal funding will make this walkway get underway here in Rosarito.”
Adame Muñoz and business owners believe the boardwalk will help bring more visitors to the area.
The city’s chamber of commerce says tourism to Rosarito has dropped anywhere from 15 to 20 percent in the last five years.
Gustavo Torres Ramírez, a member of the chamber, says posts on social medial about police extorting visitors have not helped along with the ongoing long border waits.
According to Torres Ramírez, 65 to 70 percent of all businesses in Rosarito depend on tourism to survive. That restaurants, bars, hotels and short-term rentals like Airbnb.
