EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Another Fort Bliss soldier has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a fellow soldier back in February in East El Paso, El Paso Police said in a news release.
El Paso Police said Howard Chevard Dyron Brock, 21, was arrested on Monday, June 9, and charged with murder under a $1 million bond in connection with the shooting death of 23-year-old Edward Daquan Smith.
As we previously reported, another man, Eric Lamarr Mathis, 24, was arrested in March for Smith’s murder.
Fort Bliss confirmed that Brock, Mathis, and Smith were all soldiers at the Army post.
Fort Bliss said Brock is a unit supply specialist assigned to the 1st Armored Division, Mathis is a specialist assigned to the 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command, and Smith was a private assigned to the 1st Armored Division.
The shooting incident occurred right before midnight on Friday, Feb. 28, at the 2100 block of Setting Sun in East El Paso, after an altercation took place between Brock, Mathis, and Smith, according to court documents.
According to court documents, witnesses said Smith was confronted by Brock and Mathis on the street in front of a house party at a short-term rental property.
The confrontation resulted in multiple shots being fired by Brock, Mathis, and Smith, according to court documents.
According to court documents, Mathis was injured and was dropped off at the El Paso Emergency Room, while officers located Smith unresponsive on the sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds. He was declared dead at the scene.
The 6-year-old stepson of Mathis had witnessed the murder saying,” Daddy shot the gun,” and “Daddy shot the guy,” according to court documents.
