EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The City of El Paso Parks and Recreation Department, in partnership with Black El Paso Voice, will be hosting a Juneteenth celebration to honor and recognize the significance of the holiday in the El Paso community.
According to the news release by the City, the event will take place from 5:30 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, June 14 at Nations Tobin Park, 8831 Railroad Dr.
Partnered with Black El Paso Voice, the celebration is an opportunity to commemorate, reflect and celebrate the significance of Juneteenth, according to the City.
“Juneteenth is a meaningful time to reflect on our history, recognize the strength of those who came before us, and come together as a community,” City Manager Dionne Mack said. “We’re honored to celebrate this day with El Pasoans and to support events that promote understanding, unity, and inclusion.”
Juneteenth — also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day or Emancipation Day — is when enslaved people living in Texas learned that they were free, over two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, according to the City.
The free event will feature live music, family games, jumping balloons, food trucks, interactive activities and informational booths hosted by various City departments, the news release read.
In addition, the City of El Paso Department of Public Health will be offering free measles vaccines.
