EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Fort Bliss celebrated the 250th birthday of the U.S. Army with a ceremonial cake-cutting ceremony and a salute to local veterans during a family-friendly event Saturday, June 14 at Freedom Crossing.
The event brought together soldiers, families, representatives from the Fort Bliss and El
Paso communities, veterans of the Korean War Veterans Association (KWVA) Chapter
249 and local leaders for a day of celebration, reflection, and unity, Fort Bliss said.

The highlight of event was the traditional multi-generational cake-cutting ceremony. Fort Bliss recognized veterans from the Korean War, Vietnam, the Gulf War and the most recent war on terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“I can think of no better way of celebrating the 250th birthday of the Army than with the
group of veterans that we have behind me here. They truly embody what this Army’s
motto is, which is ‘This We’ll Defend,’” said Brig. Gen. Rory A. Crooks, deputy
commanding general of operations of the1st Armored Division, who focused his
remarks on the historical impacts of the Army and the importance of the
people who served.
“Even though I served in the Navy, I’m honored to be here. Whether you’re Army,
Marines, Air Force, or Navy, we’re all brothers,” said El Paso native and retired Petty Officer 3rd
Class Ramon Rosales, a Korean War-era Navy veteran and former prisoner of
war.
Rosales is currently a member of KWVA Chapter 249, whose members were
recognized as honored guests, representing the enduring spirit and sacrifice of Korean
War veterans during a day of community celebration and remembrance.
The ceremony also included a moment to recognize some current soldiers.
After completing his remarks, Crooks recognized U.S. Army culinary
specialists Pfc. Briella Taylor of 1st Squadron, 1st Armored Cavalry Regiment, and Pfc.
Yorgelis Quiceno of 1st Battalion, 35th Armored Regiment for preparing the cake used
for the special occasion.
The event brought together members of the community, and veterans of the past and
present generations to honor the Army’s legacy of service and sacrifice through a day of
fun, family-friendly activities, live entertainment by the 1st Armored Division Band and
unity across all branches, Fort Bliss said.
