EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The El Paso and Las Cruces region experienced a strong dust storm known as a haboob on Sunday evening, June 15, the National Weather Service El Paso said.
The haboob blew into El Paso County at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday near Horizon City, the National Weather Service said.

It traveled over the Franklin Mountains, the Upper Valley and then made its way to Las Cruces where it went over the top of the Organ Mountains just before sunset.
Visibility was down to three-quarters of a mile at times with wind gusts ranging from 35-45 mph.
A dust advisory remained in effect through 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

“Haboobs occur as a result of thunderstorm outflow winds. Strong thunderstorm winds can start a dust storm that can drastically reduce visibility,” the National Weather Service said.
