We regret to report that (Ret) Col. Cary Westin, who had signed a contract with El Paso Independent School District to serve as a business consultant starting April 2, was terminated yesterday with only 13 days left in his contract.
According to Superintendent Diana Sayavedra, who was forced out of her job by Leah Hanany and her cohorts, Westin had been tasked with (1) seeking creative solutions for the EPISD surplus properties, (2) strengthening the district’s partnership with the City, and (3) assisting with streamlining operations for greater efficiency.
Col. Westin served in the US Army for 24 years and holds a Master of Military Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College. He has 40 years of leadership experience and served brilliantly as Interim City Manager of the City of El Paso before consulting for EPISD.
But apparently that was not good enough for the new woke Board of EPISD and its CFO-turned-Superintendent, Martha Aguirre, who could not wait 13 days until Westin’s contract ended.
They apparently feel they have the financial acumen to navigate the massive budget deficit, shrinking enrollments, and other Herculean challenges without help from professionals who have far more talent and experience than they do.
Regardless, terminating Westin without explanation and with only 13 days left in his contract was downright vicious and reflects very poorly on the school district’s new leadership.
This is the third catastrophic EPISD decision in less than a month, after reopening Lamar Elementary and firing Superintendent Sayavedra without cause. At this rate, the district will implode financially by the middle of FY 2027.
We wrote to Ms. Aguirre for comment but did not receive a reply in time for this report.
