EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a flood watch in effect through Thursday, June 26, for Sunland Park and surrounding areas such as West El Paso, the City of Sunland Park said in a press release.
The City says storms are expected to produce rainfall with rates exceeding 2 inches per hour, which can significantly increase the risk of flooding in urban zones, canyons, and areas with burn scars.
City crews are currently monitoring and mitigating flood-prone areas such as Anapra, Carlos Aguirre Court, and other areas as they deploy pumps and other equipment to reduce water accumulation, the City said.
Drone flights are also underway to map damage and prioritize sediment removal in affected zones to assess flood impacts.
Residents are encouraged to report any flooding or drainage issues using the City’s online request portal here.
Sandbags are also available to residents for the potential flooding and will be available at the following locations:
- Station 1: 1030 McNutt Rd
- Station 2: 5630 McNutt Rd
The City says there’s a limit of 10 sandbags per household, and sand will not be provided. Residents will have to fill the bags on their own.
The City also says it’s been awarded $3.5 million by the New Mexico Finance Authority’s Water Trust Fund (WPF-6619) to address long-term flooding challenges on Carlos Aguirre Court.
“Construction for this project is anticipated to begin in early 2026, ahead of next year’s monsoon season. This investment marks a critical step toward permanent infrastructure improvements in one of our most impacted neighborhoods,” the City said.
