Posted on July 6, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Two fires are now burning in the Gila National Forest, north of Silver City, New Mexico.

The larger Trout Fire, which has been burning for more than three weeks now, has charred 47,294 acres and remains at 89 percent containment for the second day in a row, fire officials said on Sunday morning, July 6.

A newer fire, called the Panther Fire, is burning 10 miles west of Lake Roberts. This fire started on July 2 and was caused by lightning. This fire has burned 80 acres and is 0 percent contained. Thirty-five fire personnel on are scene fighting this new blaze, fire officials report.

The Trout Fire has been burning since June 12 and was also caused by lightning. About 180 firefighters remain on scene of that blaze.

Here is a summary of what fire officials say they are doing:

Saturday, aviation resources were used to transport firefighters to the new Panther Fire, burning 10 miles west of Lake Roberts.

Retardant was utilized to assist firefighters as they implemented direct line tactics. Sunday, an additional hotshot crew will be inserted along with medical support personnel. Aviation will also
support the ground crews.

Progress continues on the Trout Fire, with road repair crews working on the south side of the fire and firefighters securing the southwest perimeter of the fire ensuring there is no residual heat that could threaten the line.

Weather is expected to be warmer and dryer on Sunday. Temperatures will reach into the 90s with humidity in the teens and light winds. There is a slight chance of afternoon thunderstorms.

Motorists, residents and visitors are urged to remain vigilant and travel cautiously in the fire area and around fire personnel.
