Border Report – Border Report Live: Restaurateurs take stand against ICE raids

Posted on July 9, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) — Some South Texas business owners are taking a stand against immigration raids, many of which have left them with fewer workers or none at all.

Restaurants like Taqueria Mission, in Mission, Texas, have placed “no trespassing” signs on their doors, demanding that federal agents not step onto their private property without a warrant.

‘More than a symbolic deterrent’: Businesses post signs against ICE trespassing

On this episode of Border Report Live with host Rudy Mireles and correspondent Sandra Sanchez, guest Jorge Vela, a reporter for Nexstar’s KVEO and CBS 4 in Harlingen, Texas, discusses his conversation with those restaurant owners as well as an immigration lawyer who said the signs not only allow business owners to express their opposition to immigration raids but solidarity with community members.

Whether or not federal agents must adhere to the signs is up for debate.

In recent weeks, federal immigration authorities have conducted raids at businesses, homes, courthouses, restaurants and construction sites in South Texas.

Gonzalez asks Trump to help small businesses impacted by ICE raids

That prompted U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-Texas, to reach out and ask President Donald Trump to use his executive powers to help businesses that are struggling due to the immigration raids.

In a letter to the president, Gonzalez said the U.S. is heavily reliant on an undocumented workforce in industries like construction, agriculture, and hospitality, but said they are being harmed by his administration’s “very aggressive policy.”

“I am shocked by some of the visuals that I see on TV that I see on social media, it’s a very aggressive enforcement. I don’t think anybody had ever seen before in this country not in our lifetime,” Gonzalez said. “And I think it’s shameful for this administration, the way they’re conducting themselves.”

Another member of Congress from South Texas, Republican Rep. Monica De La Cruz, has also weighed in and has proposed relief for farmworkers.
