EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — As floodwaters devastated neighborhoods in Ruidoso, dozens of family pets were left behind — some scared, injured, and separated from their owners.
The Humane Society of Lincoln County is stepping in to help, working around the clock to rescue animals and help reunite them with the families who were forced to flee without them.
“We do currently have animals that have been coming in, not knowing who the owners are,” said Abel Guzman, executive director of the Humane Society. “Some were found days later hiding, injured, covered in mud. Unfortunately, some didn’t make it.”
So far, the shelter has taken in more than a dozen animals, and more are arriving each day. Some of the animals are being temporarily housed while their owners recover from losing their homes. Others remain unclaimed.
Microchipping has played a major role in reconnecting animals with their families, officials said. In response, the shelter is now offering free microchipping for all Lincoln County residents.
The Humane Society’s work goes beyond pet rescues. The shelter is also supporting flood victims by distributing donations, including toiletries, clothing, food, and cleaning supplies through designated locations in the community.
“It has been terrific the donations that we’ve had, monetary-wise and even donations of things that people need for everyday life. So it’s helped out so much,” Guzman said.
The shelter is currently accepting donations of pet food, bedding, crates, leashes, and household items. Monetary donations are also welcome to help cover medical expenses and supplies.
If you’ve lost a pet or want to help, you can visit the Humane Society of Lincoln County. Check their Facebook page, or drop off donations directly at the shelter in Ruidoso.
