SILVER CITY, N.M. (KTSM) — The Goose Fire, which is burning northwest of Silver City, has increased in size and still remains at 0 percent containment, fire officials said July 21.
The fire is currently at 3,121 acres, and close to 200 personnel are working on the fire. The cause of the fire has been ruled as lightning.
Fire crews will patrol and secure a line along Goose Lake Trail where ignitions were completed. Preparatory work will continue along Forest Rd 4083 V, and firing operations may resume east along Forest Rd 282 if conditions allow, fire officials said.
Thunderstorms and lightning were present in the fire area on Sunday, July 20, but very little precipitation actually occurred. Fire officials said an updated acreage reflects more accurate data obtained through aerial mapping.
Scattered showers and storms are forecasted this afternoon in the area, and heavy rainfall, lightning, and winds are expected, fire officials said.
A new temporary flight restriction went into effect at 6 a.m. Sunday.

Unmanned aircraft, such as drones, pose a serious risk to firefighting and can cause air operations to cease, fire officials said.
