SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — The construction on an elevated highway, connecting Tijuana’s beach communities to its airport, is 80 percent complete, according to Kurt Honold Morales, Baja California’s Secretary of the Economy.
When done, the roadway will be about 12 miles long bypassing Tijuana’s downtown area and is expected to ease congestion around the San Ysidro Port of Entry.
The construction is being supervised by Mexico’s Secretary of Defense, which is now in charge of almost all infrastructure projects in Mexico.
“The general in charge believes that by the end of the year, or early next year, all the work will be done, and the roadway will be functioning,” said Honold Morales. “They are working hard with the construction.”
The viaduct is almost two years behind schedule, with modifications to the design being blamed for the delays.
Honold Morales said most of the work is now being done near the airport.
“All the columns and supports to the structure are done, now it’s just a matter of finishing the traffic lanes that go on top, it’s all shaping into a roadway.”
