MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WPIX) – Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old Las Vegas man, has been identified by the New York Police Department as the shooter who killed four people inside a Manhattan skyscraper Monday.
Tamura left his home on Saturday for a three-day cross-country journey, according to NYPD Commissioner Tisch. Police said he first stopped in Colorado before heading to Nebraska and Iowa.
Tamura arrived in Columbia, N.J., around 4:30 p.m. Monday before making his way to Midtown, according to authorities. Sources said the 2011 BMW 3 Series he was driving had Nevada license plates and an expired registration.
Police said he shot and killed four people, including NYPD Officer Didarul Islam. He later died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the offices of Rudin Management, one of New York City’s largest property owners, according to authorities.
Sources told Nexstar’s WPIX that Tamura, originally from California, worked as a security guard at the Lake Las Vegas Resort in 2020. He also had made high-value cash transactions at two casinos in 2021, including cashing in $12,860 at the Gold Coast Hotel and cashing out $16,615 at Hotspur Resorts, according to sources.
Sources said Tamura was arrested in California in 2012 for trespassing. He also had an arrest from 2023 on his record, in which he was charged with throwing a substance at a vehicle with the intent to cause harm, according to sources.
Police confirmed he had a concealed carry permit issued in 2022 that was good for five years. Tisch said Tamura had a documented history of mental illness.
Tamura had a note on him that said he had suffered a brain injury and that he blamed the NFL, according to Mayor Eric Adams.
“He was not an NFL player,” Adams said. “It appears as though he was blaming the NFL for his CTE… and he shot himself and took his own life. Shot himself in the chest. It appears to have been that he wanted to preserve his brain for reason of research.”
The investigation into Tamura’s motive revealed that he spent part of his youth in Los Angeles, where he was a student at Granada High School and played football.
