KTSM News – Open burning restrictions lifted in Doña Ana County

Posted on July 29, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Open burning restrictions have been lifted in Doña Ana County, effective starting on Friday, July 25, the County said in a news release.

Recent monsoonal rains and increased humidity have brought some relief to drought conditions, reducing the fire danger across much of the County, Doña Ana County said.

While open burning is now permitted, residents and agricultural businesses are reminded that County ordinances and the fire code strictly prohibit the burning of trash, tires or construction materials, the County said.

Only natural vegetation such as leaves, tree limbs and weeds may be burned in a controlled-burn setting.

Before conducting a controlled burn, residents must contact the Mesilla Valley Regional Dispatch Authority non-emergency line at (575) 526-0795 to verify that it is a designated “Burn Day.”

Callers must provide their name, address of intended burn and the times that the burning is expected to occur.

Burning without notifying MVRDA is a violation of County ordinance and could result in a citation. Burning unauthorized materials or allowing a controlled burn to escape due to negligence could also result in a citation, the County said.

Doña Ana Fire Rescue urges the public to follow all burn regulations and to be considerate of neighbors while burning permitted materials.

For questions or additional information, contact DAFR at (575) 647-7921.
