EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The El Paso Independent School District will be implementing the Texas House Bill 1481 in school classrooms starting on Aug. 4.
The school district says students will not be permitted to use cell phones, tablets, smartwatches, AI glasses, or other wireless communication devices during school hours.
Students can bring their phones and digital devices to school. However, all devices must be turned off and stored in backpacks or designated areas within classrooms, the school district said.
The following exceptions apply regarding cell phone use during school hours.
- Students may use their cell phones if there is a documented need based on a directive from a qualified physician. This documentation must be submitted and approved by the campus administrator.
- Students may use their cell phones for the implementation of an individualized education plan, a 504 plan, or a similar plan.
- In the event of an emergency, students will be allowed to use their phones or communication devices.
If a student does not follow the guidelines, it may result in “confiscation of the device and other disciplinary actions in accordance with the district’s student code of conduct,” the school district said.
If a confiscated cell phone or device is not retrieved by the student, the school district will dispose of it after providing a notice as required by law, the school district said.
