The Coordinates series celebrates lesser-known locales worth visiting across the state. It can be hard to appreciate the landscape of West Texas when you’re hurtling toward the horizon, tumbleweeds in your wake and a Tarantino-ish playlist making you feel as if you’re on your way to a shoot-out. “You’re going eighty miles an hour and you don’t really appreciate what’s growing there,” says Elizabeth Chu Richter, of Corpus Christi–based Richter Architects. She and her partner in life and work, David Richter, designed the Pecos County Safety Rest Area to invite travelers to slow down and take in the mountainous terrain.
