KTSM News – El Paso to remember victims, honor resilience during Aug. 3 Walmart shooting

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso will honor and remember the victims and heroes of its darkest day as the sixth anniversary of the Aug. 3, 2019, Walmart massacre rolls around.

El Paso and the surrounding Borderland will remember the 23 lives lost that day and more than 20 others who were wounded and carry scars both physical and mental.

Here is a list of events to commemorate and remember that day.

City of El Paso ceremony
The City of El Paso and the Border Network for Human Rights will co-host a remembrance ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, at the Aug. 3 Memorial at Jim Crouch Park, 7500 W.H. Burges.

The ceremony will include remarks from Mayor Renard Johnson, the consulate general of Mexico in El Paso, and BNHR Executive Director Fernando Garcia.

As part of the ceremony, the names of the 23 victims will be read aloud with a ceremonial bell tolling after each name and the release of doves after a moment of silence.

In addition, BNHR will lead its annual Community Memorial Procession, featuring 23 monumental crosses representing each of the lives lost.


El Paso County to remember Aug. 3 victims, survivors during Day of Remembrance

Aug. 3rd Day of Resilience Ceremony
El Paso County and El Paso United Family Resiliency Center  will host remembrance activities at the Healing Garden located at Ascarate Park, 6900 Delta Drive. The ceremony will be from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 3.

El Paso Pro Musica will play at 6:30 p.m. during the ceremony. After their performance, a prayer and reading of the names will be held in conjunction with the El Paso County Commissioners Court.

Unite with Light
Community members are encouraged to light their porches or windows with orange lights at 8:30 p.m. each night in honor of the victims from Monday, July 28, through Aug. 8.

The following landmarks will also be illuminated in orange during this time:

  • Public art sculpture at I-10 and Airway
  • I-10 Downtown arches
  • Public Art near the Abraham Chavez Theater
  • El Paso International Airport landscaping, walking path, and terminal

Remembrance of Aug. 3
A tribute installation will be on display outside City Council Chambers, featuring photographs of the 23 lives lost on Aug. 3, 2019. This display can be viewed from Tuesday, July 29 to Aug. 8.

Star on the Mountain
The iconic Star on the Mountain will flash 23 times in memory of the 23 victims at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3.

El Paso Strong memorial candelarias
You can make a candelaria in remembrance of the Aug. 3 victims from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, at the Sergio Troncoso Library, 9321 Alameda. Materials will be provided

A Collage of El Paso
Patrons at the Armijo Library, 620 E. 7th Ave., can create a collage of what El Paso means to them. The event will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 31. Artwork will be on display from Aug. 1-16.

Sound Bath Meditation
A meditative sound experience to promote healing, reflection, and inner peace. The event will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 31 and 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 1 at Cielo Vista Park, 9030 Cosmos Ave.

Memorial displays
Both the El Paso Museum of History, 510 N. Santa Fe, and the El Paso Museum of Archaeology, 4301 Woodrow Bean, will have lobby displays commemorating the Aug. 3 shootings. They will be displayed on Friday, Aug. 1.
