EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Three young El Pasoans brought home national recognition after competing against the best track and field athletes last month in Georgia, according to a news release announcing their accomplishments.
According to the news release, Richard Mendoza, Aiden Gonzalez, and Ava Escobedo traveled to Savannah, Georgia, on the week of July 21-27 to represent the Westside Run Squad at the USATF National Junior Olympic Championships.
They all received “All-American” status; only the top eight in each event receive this recognition, according to the news release.
“This prestigious honor signifies that these athletes are among the nation’s best in their age division and event,” read the news release.
Here’s how these athletes ranked based on division, according to the news release.
Richard Mendoza
- Qualified for the 1500 and 3000 meters in the 15-16 division.
- He placed first in the 3000 meters and fifth in the 1500 meters.
Aiden Gonzalez
- Qualified for the 2K Steeple Chase, 800 and 1500 meters in the 13-14 division.
- He placed third in the 2K Steeple Chase.
Ava Escobedo
- Qualified for the 800 and 1500 meters in the 8 and under division.
- She placed fifth in the 1500 meters.
