SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — Six police officers in Cabo San Lucas have been arrested by the attorney general’s office in Baja California Sur, accused of running a kidnapping and extortion ring.

Investigators say back in June, a complaint was filed after the disappearance of two men, one 17 years of age, the other 21, both Mexican nationals.

Both were reported missing in the popular tourist destination of Cabo San Lucas.

According to the Baja Sur Attorney General, their investigation eventually led them to the six police officers who had reportedly kidnapped the two men and were holding them for ransom.

Surveillance video and witness statements led detectives to the police officers who are now in custody.

If convicted, each of the six officers is facing 40 to 60 years in prison and a $140,000 fine.

As of now, the officers in custody are only charged with the abduction of the two men, but are believed to be responsible for other kidnappings including abductions of American citizens, according to the Baja California Sur Attorney General’s Office.
