EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — As the University of Texas at El Paso prepares to kick off the fall semester on August 25, students are reminded of a requirement: the Meningitis vaccination. The vaccine is mandatory for students under the age of 22 who plan to attend classes on campus this semester.
To help students and parents navigate this requirement, Ivan Luna, Director of Immunize El Paso, joined KTSM 9 News on Wednesday during the noon to talk about what students need to do to get vaccinated. Luna plans to explain how students can access the vaccine, where they can get it, and why it’s crucial for their health.
Meningitis is a serious illness that primarily affects the brain and spinal cord. The infection can lead to severe complications, including brain damage, hearing loss, or even death, according to the Mayo Clinic. Luna will also discuss how the Meningitis virus spreads and the symptoms students should be aware of.
August is Immunization Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to also highlight other essential vaccines for college students. Luna will outline which vaccines are recommended for those in the college-age group and provide details on the potential benefits and side effects.
