Border Report – Police looking for more bodies at defunct crematorium

Posted on August 6, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) – Police in Juarez, Mexico, on Wednesday returned to the building from where they pulled 383 improperly stored cadavers just a few weeks ago.

The officers arrived in nine vehicles to Crematorio Plenitud in south Juarez, closed the streets around it and began inspecting the backyard with equipment that included ground sensors.

3 bodies found in SUV at home linked to jailed funeral home operator

“We are working with the local search (for missing persons) commission and the Missing Persons Unit on this search,” said Gabriela Cota, a spokeswoman for the Chihuahua Attorney General’s Office. “We are using (sensors), measurement devices to be certain there is nothing else here.”

Police officers also searched an adjacent home and extracted unknown items they wrapped in a blanket that could be seen next to a police pickup. No human remains had been located as of 2 p.m. local time.

Families worry funeral homes gave them fake ashes of deceased relatives

Mexican health authorities cited the crematorium for several code violations in 2022. The business allegedly continued to receive cadavers from at least five Juarez funeral homes.

Police searched the building late last June and found the crematorium inoperable and hundreds of bodies piled about. Police told reporters at the time that the furnace had been lacking gas service for an undetermined period of time.

One funeral home operator has been arrested so far on charges of improper disposal of cadavers. The owner of the crematorium, identified by police only as Jose Luis A., and an employee named Facundo M. are facing related but multiple charges in connection with the case.
