KTSM News – Mutt Monday, Aug. 11 – Meet Maple Syrup!

Posted on August 11, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — It’s Mutt Monday at KTSM!

This week, our friends from El Paso Animal Services brought Maple Syrup for us to meet and hang out with!

With reports of mosquitoes spreading illnesses to people this time of year, remember — they can also spread deadly diseases to our pets.

Mosquitoes thrive in warm and humid conditions, which have been characteristic of El Paso this August.

Wet weather could also mean an increase in breeding opportunities and contribute to a higher mosquito population.

El Paso Animal Services has some important information to take into consideration when it comes to pets diseases:

  • Pests can carry viruses like West Nile, but the most dangerous and common parasite they transmit is heartworm, which affects thousands of pets every year.
  • Heartworms are long, thin parasitic roundworms that infect a variety of mammals and can be life-threatening.
  • This parasite is transmitted by mosquitoes, which are most active in spring and summer.
  • Dogs are most susceptible, although cats can be infected as well, but they are typically not a good host for the parasite.
  • Early signs your pet may be infected are mild, persistent coughs, fatigue, decreased appetite, weight loss, fainting, and seizures.
  • Heartworm is treatable, although it is a long, complicated, and costly procedure; however, heartworm can easily be prevented by getting your pet tested and using heartworm preventive.
  • Consult with your veterinarian and visit EPVMA.org to find a low-cost vet near you!

El Paso Animal Services and KTSM are ready to help you find your perfect match!
