SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum told reporters on Monday she is supportive of legislation in Mexico’s Senate to repatriate Palestinian orphans to Mexico.
Sheinbaum said if necessary, Mexico will remain open to helping during this humanitarian crisis and others whenever possible.
Sen. Gerardo Fernández Noroña has drawn up a formal proposal to have Mexico welcome orphans from Palestine saying this is something Mexico has done with other children throughout its history.
Sheinbaum reiterated her government supports the idea of two separate states in Gaza, one for Palestine and one for Israeli as a way to end tensions in the Middle East.
During the last two years, there has been an ongoing military conflict in the Gaza Strip.
Last week, the Israeli Security Cabinet approved a measure to take full control of all Palestinian territory, something opposed by most countries.
Since October 2023, the United Nations estimates 18,000 children have been killed by Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip.
Israel also continues to block humanitarian aid from making its way to Gaza.
According to Palestinian figures, more than 50,000 children have died because of hunger, the United Nations estimates at least 242,000 other children are suffering from health problems due to the lack of food and clean water.
