The challenges he faced during that tenure included the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, mass protests against racism and police brutality after the murder of George Floyd, and efforts at the state capitol to curtail the power of local government.Through it all, as you’ll hear in this week’s episode, Nirenberg advocated a pragmatic approach to progressive city politics.In early June, a couple of weeks before the end of his term, Texas Monthly contributor Bekah McNeel caught up with Nirenberg at city hall, where he reflected on his time as mayor and discussed what it takes to get things done in office these days.
