EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Canutillo Independent School District celebrated the start of $7 million in renovations at Garcia Elementary School on Wednesday, Aug. 27, at the Upper Valley campus, 6550 Westside Dr.
“We are more than excited to get started on the transformative work coming to Garcia and all of our campuses thanks to the investment our community made through the Canutillo Bond,” Interim Superintendent Jesica Arellano said. “Garcia Elementary is poised to strengthen the way it delivers high-quality teaching and learning through these renovations.”
As KTSM previously reported, Canutillo ISD’s Board of Trustees approved $14.7 million in construction contracts for major renovations at Childress, Damian, and Garcia elementary schools.
The bond, and what Canutillo ISD called the largest per-capita school infrastructure program ever approved by voters in El Paso County, will fund projects to improve safety and security, upgrade HVAC systems, and make structural and aesthetic improvements that will enhance instruction at Garcia.
The planned work includes the following, according to Canutillo ISD:
- Construction of state-of-the-art entry vestibules to control campus access and improve security
- Installation of advanced security cameras for real-time monitoring and response
- Modernized public address systems for direct communication between classrooms and the front office
- A new fire alarm system
- Upgrades to badge-controlled door access throughout the school
- New HVAC units
- Roof maintenance
- Wireless infrastructure upgrades
- A new instructional technology classroom
- New water heaters and wall paint in select interior spaces
- A new staff restroom
- A new pedestrian gate on Westside Drive
- A new gym speaker
- New playground canopies
All bond work at the school is expected to be completed within a year.
