EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The City of El Paso and the City Attorney’s Office rescued 25 dogs and several cats from an animal cruelty case, after finding them living in unsanitary and unsafe conditions, according to the news release on Wednesday, Aug. 27.
According to the City, the case followed multiple welfare checks at a residence, where City staff noted “strong odors and unsanitary outdoor conditions.”
El Paso Animal Services removed three dogs from the residence earlier this month; one of the dogs was sick and the other two were allegedly aggressive.
The City said that based on those findings, they were able to obtain a writ of execution for animal cruelty, which allowed Animal Services and the El Paso Police Department to enter the home.
Authorities found 25 dogs and several cats living in “unsanitary and unsafe” conditions at the residence.
“Dogs were confined in stacked wire kennels without proper separation, while cats were kept in a bathtub covered with wire,” read the news release.
According to the City, all animals were seized and taken into Animal Services’ care.
Municipal Court 3B ruled that the animals had been “cruelly” treated and ordered the animals to be permanently removed from the owner’s care.
In addition, the City said that the court included Animal Services’ handling, impoundment, vaccination and microchip fees, totaling $6,298.50 in the ruling.
“This ruling makes clear that cruelty to animals will not be tolerated in our community,” City Attorney Karla Nieman said. “Our office will continue to pursue these cases to hold individuals accountable and to ensure animals are treated humanely. This outcome also reflects the strong partnership between Animal Services and the Police Department, whose work made it
possible to remove these animals from unsafe conditions and place them on the path to recovery.”
The rescued animals are now receiving care from El Paso Animal Services.
