El Paso Taxpayer Revolt – TAX HIKES FROM CITY, COUNTY, AND UMC WIPE OUT BENEFIT FROM INCREASED SCHOOL TAX EXEMPTION

Posted on August 28, 2025

[[{“value”:”

We now have the effective tax figures from all five local taxing entities for FY 2026 and are the only media outlet to report them.

The City is increasing its tax on the average-valued home ($221,726) by $83 in FY 2026. The County is increasing its tax by $137 and UMC is increasing its tax by $72. EPCC has adopted the no-new-revenue tax rate and is not increasing its tax.

Thus, the City, County and UMC are increasing our property tax by $292 on average.

On August 19, the EPISD Board of Trustees voted 5-1 to increase the tax on the average home by $130, but in November the voters are expected to pass an increase in the school tax exemption from $100,000 to $140,000, which means that the EPISD property tax will actually decrease by $303 on average. These figures come from EPISD Treasurer Walter Byers, who kindly spoke to us this afternoon.

Unfortunately, the $303 in school tax relief from the State of Texas will be almost completely wiped out by the $292 in tax increases from the City, County, and UMC.

Please be sure to write to the 18 politicians who are directly responsible for the tax increases and offer them your heartfelt thanks for increasing your cost of living at the expense of supporting your families: Mayor Renard Johnson and City Representatives Alejandra Chavez, Josh Acevedo, Deanna Maldonado-Rocha, Cynthia Boyar Trejo, Ivan Nino, Art Fierro, Lily Limon; and Chris Canales; County Judge Ricardo Samaniego and Commissioners Michelle Butler, David Stout, and Sergio Coronado; and EPISD Trustees Leah Hanany, Jack Loveridge, Alex Cuellar, Mindy Sutton, and Robert Osterland.
