Posted on August 28, 2025

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — With COVID-19 cases on the rise in many U.S. states, in Baja California, the virus is almost non-existent, according to its secretary of health, José Adrián Medina Amarillas.

“We’ve gone several months without a COVID-19-related death, there’s been a few cases, but they’ve been mild and have been treated,” said Medina Amarillas. “We have an anti-viral that fortunately, has helped a lot, it’s no longer an illness with social impact, at least it hasn’t been for a few months.”

As of August 19, 2025, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that COVID-19 infections are growing or likely growing in 36 U.S. states.

Medina Amarillas said while many U.S. states, such as New York and California, are experiencing a rise in cases, Baja has been relatively free of the virus.

“We continue to be free of COVID-19 without any problems.”
