For a moment, it looked like Greg Casar’s meteoric rise—from labor organizer to twentysomething Austin City Council member to thirtysomething nationally prominent politician—was in jeopardy. When I met with him in late August at his sparse office in East Austin, the two-term congressman was just a week out from avoiding a head-on collision with another Austin progressive stalwart—Congressman Lloyd Doggett. Donald Trump had ordered Texas Republicans to draw up new congressional maps for the state, potentially giving the GOP five new seats. Mapmakers in the Legislature had Frankensteined Casar’s very Democratic Austin–to–San Antonio district, lopping off his Austin base and adding rural Republican counties in South Texas.
