KTSM News – County to break ground on veterans memorial in Fabens

Posted on September 1, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso County is breaking ground on a new veterans memorial in Fabens.

The ceremony will be at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at Fabens Veterans Park, on PFC Fernando Gutierrez Street (formerly 602 4th St. NE).

The memorial will be in the heart of the park and is “designed to serve as a permanent tribute to the men and women who have bravely served in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Air Force, and Space Force,” the County said in a news release.

Funding for the project includes a $900,000 federal grant that was obtained by the El Paso County Water Control and Improvement District No. 4. El Paso County also approved a match of more than $220,000 for the project.

“The project reflects El Paso County’s continued commitment to veterans and is identified as a key initiative under the El Paso County Parks and Recreation Master Plan,” the County said.

Designed by G&A Architecture, the memorial will feature:

• Six granite memorial walls — one for each military branch — arranged in a radial pattern surrounding a central American flag

• A six-sided star connecting all branches at the heart of the memorial

• Gently sloped walkways, landscaped green spaces, and seating areas for quiet reflection

• Integrated lighting to keep the site illuminated and visible day and night

The memorial will be elevated two feet above park grade to enhance visibility and create a
dignified setting, the County said.

“The Fabens Veterans Memorial will serve as a place of remembrance, unity, and
pride for generations to come,” the County said.
